If you've checked off Sula Vineyards from your bucket list, fret not. We have a growing wine scene in our very own (faraway) backyard. We discovered and jotted down wineries in Nasik and Akluj in Maharashtra that you must not miss out on. Head over to these spots over the weekend to go wine tasting in Mumbai, winery hopping, or sit back and relax at the ones that offer accommodation.

Vallonné Vineyards
This is a small boutique winery in Igatpuri on the way to Nashik, about an hour before you get to Garware Circle in Nashik. They produce great wines and have four rustic rooms for you to spend your weekend in. This is a winery that takes enjoying nature, food and wine seriously, so there are no TVs or WiFi available in the rooms. Makes for a great digital detox! With a view of the lake, curated outdoor activities, and outstanding wine to sip on throughout your stay, what more could you want?
What To Try: They produce an outstanding Malbec, and their dessert wine, Vin de Passerillage, is hands down one of the best in India. Another fabulous blend is the Rose and Reserve Merlot.

York Winery
Just ahead of Sula is York Winery. York has been consistent with their quality and is now considered at the forefront of the wine scene in India. They have a tasting room with a view of Gangapur Lake, flanked by hills. We recommend spending a relaxing afternoon savouring their award-winning wines while taking in all the views the space has to offer. The Tasting Room, York's in-house restaurant, serves up lovely North Indian and local cuisine to go with their wines.
What To Try: Try their sparkling Rosé, their Chenin Blanc, which has an oak influence and has revolutionised the way wines from this grape variety have been made in India. Also, try their top-end red, called Arros; it is really something to die for.

Nipha Winery
Visiting Nipha Winery feels like someone invited you over to their farm for wine and pizza. A small, family-run boutique winery, this one makes wines in small batches, so you know a lot of love goes into every bottle. If you're booking a tour, they'll guide you through the process of making their sparkling wines and reds, and even offer grape stomping during the season. It's all by appointment, so call beforehand and make a day of it. You'll also find a cosy pizzeria in the middle of the vineyard, so it's perfect for a chill afternoon with friends, some pizza and of course, wines.
What To Try: Try the Nipha Chardonnay for its hints of green apple, Nipha Muscat blanc, if you like a sweet profile, and Nipha Sparkling for sure.

Cerana Meads
Cerana is a meadery in the industrial part of Sinnar, which might sound odd, but the space is quite peaceful inside. Like the name suggests, they make meads, which are alcoholic beverages made from fermented honey. The founders of the meadery are very passionate, and when you book a tour of the vineyard, they will tell you everything about bees, honey, and how mead is made. There’s a tasting session that includes different types of honey and meads, and you also get to try some of their experimental batches.
What To Try: If you find their Chenin Blanc, Pomegranate Vanilla, Jamun, and Blue pea Lavender meads in stock, you have to try them.

Oakwood Vineyards
Oakwood Vineyards is five hours away from Mumbai, but if you're up for a proper wine weekend, it's worth the drive. It has a breezy countryside vibe with rows of grapevines stretched out over 30 acres of land along the Pravara Sangam river. The team here follows organic farming practices, and they grow a bunch of different grapes like Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin, Shiraz, and even Viognier. The wines are classic, French-style, and their winery is the largest facility entirely owned by a family. Not many people talk about them, but their wines are a class apart!
What To Try: Their Réisha Grande CRU Reserve Cabernet Shiraz, Mystik Oak Chenin Blanc, Mystik Oak Zinfandel Rose, Bella Rouge Cabernet Shiraz, and AK 47 are too good to miss.
