Even though most of us have a wardrobe full of clothes, there is a chance that we only wear a very small portion of what we own. So the next time you're spring cleaning your wardrobe, we suggest you think about donating them since it's better to give them to people in need rather than letting them lie wastefully in your cupboard. Here are six places where you can donate your clothes in Mumbai.

Share At Doorstep India

This group basically connects you to the local NGOs in the vicinity. All you do is visit their website, and a list of all the NGOs in your area will appear, and you can schedule a pickup. A convenience fee of INR 199 is charged as the tempo comes to your doorstep.

How to donate: You can book a doorstep pick up from their website, wherein you will be asked to fill in your address, inform how heavy your baggage is (choose from light pickup, medium to heavy pickup, and collection drive pickup), and pay for it accordingly. Usually, they have some NGO initiative going on, so your pickup would be free. Or, you can simply skip it and drop your baggage at their verified NGO drop points.

Wishing Well

Wishing Well collects everything from clothes, shoes, toys, to books, magazines, and even electronics, and ensures they are received by organisations they are connected to. The only criterion they have is that the goods must be usable, safe, and clean! Clothes must be washed and not worn out. Electrical and electronic appliances must be in good working condition, and toys must not be broken. It’s simple and easy, and, again, you get to help so many!

How to donate: Donors can send them an email with a description of the goods they wish to donate. These can be collected by them if you are located between Jogeshwari and Colaba. If you prefer, you can deliver the goods directly to the organisation also.

Goonj

Much like most NGOs, Goonj offers a list of dos and don’ts when it comes to donating clothes. To be on the safer side, be mindful of what you are donating.

How to donate: Goonj has centres across Mumbai where you can drop your required boxes with ease, or organise a collection camp with them in your society if you find other folks who are equally interested.

Sneha Sadan

Sneha Sadan is a home for homeless children in Andheri East, in need of clothes and food. You can donate anything that would make them happy, like football jerseys, cricket merchandise, etc. Apart from this, you can also donate toys, since they love playing in groups.

How to donate: You will have to drop off the stuff at their place. Also, it's much better if you drop them off yourself since you will get to interact with the kids.

Green Yatra

Green Yatra NGO collects stuff, be it clothes and other necessary items, from corporate houses, residential housing societies, shopping malls, cinemas, schools, colleges, and other places. The items you want to give will be collected, sorted, repaired, sewn, packaged, transported, and distributed to rural areas and urban slums.

How to donate: You can contact their head office and arrange a pickup accordingly.

Bombay Recyling Concern

Bombay Recycling Concern takes your donated clothes, shoes, and even broken bags, and makes sure they’re either reused or fairly recycled. They partner with municipal bodies in Mumbai and offer free pick-up from your doorstep, so you don’t even have to step out. Just make sure you have at least 10 kilograms of clothes for the pick-up. From shirts, kidswear, to even blankets, they accept everything.

How to donate: For doorstep pick-up, fill out this form or call them at 8600293642. You can also drop your stuff at locations like Borivali to Dadar and even Thane to Kharghar. Check out the exact locations here.

Umang Foundation Trust

Umang Foundation Trust was brought to life in an attempt to give umang (joy) to people's lives. Though their mission at its core is to promote education, they also conduct blood donation drives, clothes distribution, and more. They accept gently used uniforms (for school-going children), everyday wear, and even shoes, and sort through donations to make sure each child gets what fits.

How to donate: You can drop things off at their Mulund office (kindly call them before reaching out) or catch their volunteer-run clothing drives around villages.

Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust

Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust has been around for decades (more than 25 years), and apart from medical aid, they also collect clothes, bedsheets, and blankets for underprivileged families in and around Mumbai. If you’ve got extra linen or seasonal wear, this is the place that knows exactly where it’ll do the most good. These clothes are distributed to the people in need via several schools, colleges, NGOs, and other institutions that are directly connected to them.

How to donate: Donations can be dropped off at the trust in Grant Road East.

You can support them by making donations of cash and materials like clothes, food, and all necessary supplies. Things you donate (like sarees, kurtis, or winter wear) go directly to them via nobody else.

Kapda Bank

Kapda Bank is such a unique initiative by the team behind Mumbai’s famous dabbawalas. The system here is actually pretty simple; you can just call the team beforehand and then hand over your donation to the dabbawala during the tiffin delivery. From there on, the clothes are directly passed onto communities in Mumbai's slums and Adivasi areas like Palghar, Dahanu, and Thane. These services are provided at no cost.

How to donate: Call +919867221310 to let them know you're willing to donate, and they'll tell you the exact process.
