This historic colonial building in Kolkata has been meticulously restored by the gallery's owners, and its four vast rooms showcase contemporary artworks in a variety of media by Indian and foreign artists. The quaint Street cafe is beside the verandah with the checkered floor tiles. It's interesting to note that the gallery offers two lovely guest rooms (double with breakfast for INR 6,000) next to the exhibition site. Normally, these rooms are only used by visiting artists, but when they're free, travellers can stay there. The gallery has presented Silajit Ghosh's 'The Quest Within' in four beautifully refurbished rooms. This artistic spot is affiliated with the Rajpal Khullar Memorial Trust, which is dedicated to honouring the city's passion for modern art, dance, and classical music. Inside is a museum dating back to 1814, as well as a library filled with rare drawings, manuscripts, and volumes in languages you've probably never heard of.

Established in 1993 under the direction of ABP Pvt. Ltd, the Centre of International Modern Art (CIMA) is one of Kolkata's most prestigious art institutions. They have organised and curated about a hundred shows so far, earning both domestic and international praise from critics and the general public. With more than 11,000 square feet of cutting-edge gallery space in Calcutta, the institute hosts regular seminars and workshops with academics, artists, directors, and performers. They also have a CIMA Award Project, which aims to recognise and award young artists from across India for their talent and creativity.

Every year, right before the Pujo lights start to come up, CIMA subtly welcomes a month-long exhibit, called 'Art in Life', where traditional weaves are combined with the charm of newly emerging artists. Jewellery that shines like the afternoon sun, sarees that tell stories, and small treasures from all over India—clothes, antiques, bags—are all just waiting to be discovered. Galerie 88 curates an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art, including artists from both India and abroad. Among the artists it curates are Paritosh Sen, Ganesh Pyne, and MF Hussain. Galerie 88 is a 57-year-old private gallery that specialises in academic art and primarily displays paintings. Since their inception in 1968, they have hosted at least 363 exhibitions (292 solo shows and 71 group shows) with 451 artists, the majority of which have taken place in Calcutta.

The goal of Genesis, one of the most well-known art galleries in the City of Joy, is to support up-and-coming artists more than seasoned professionals. TRI primarily focuses on art originating from South Asia, with an annual calendar of art exhibitions, performances, festivals, and public programs. Varun and Nitasha Thapar, siblings and second-generation art curators, have created TRI, a lively new location that combines art, music, craft, and food into one unique cultural hub. The centre supported the first-ever Kolkata Queer Arts Month (Ko: QAM). The space is intimate yet lively, allowing talks to flow naturally. One of the best spots in the city for art lovers is the Birla Academy of Art and Culture! Each floor of the large, five-story edifice, which is just across from Rabindra Sarobar, is a miniature art gallery. Each piece in the gallery's varied collection of paintings, sculptures, and artefacts tells a different tale of India's rich cultural heritage. The academy often organises workshops, exhibitions, and cultural events, giving up-and-coming artists a stage on which to display their skills. Birla Academy's expansive lawns are home to an amphitheater that hosts outdoor events. The massive monolith Krishna statue known as Mangal Madhab, which combines traditional and modern design elements, is what most draws us in. Here, the half-closed eyes of Krishna are regaled with balance and spirituality, while his flute is concealed in his waistband.

As you enter, there is a massive sculpture of Ravana that is rather amazing. It spans three floors and is accessible via a lift. The upper level features paintings and sculptures by Shilpa Bhattacharjee (Shubhaprasanna's wife), Paresh Maiti, and others. The second floor's feature is a Subhaprassana-themed gallery. Jogen Chowdhary, Ganesh Haloi, and others have also created paintings. The ground floor features works by Anjali Ela Menon, Jamini Roy, and Abanindranath Tagore, among others.

You can also attend a small video show about the 2014 Kashmir floods. The large screen is housed inside a model of a fallen Kashmiri house, giving it a 3D effect. Art enthusiasts get a fantastic opportunity to view all of the well-known pieces to get a sense of what is on the market.

The Rabindranath Tagore Centre, ICCR's flagship location in Kolkata, is four levels in size. The building itself has an auditorium, café, and library. In the Bengal Gallery, the distinctive artistic treasures of the West Bengal government are on show. Exhibitions are regularly held in the second-floor Abanindranath Tagore Gallery. The Jamini Roy Gallery, which showcases SAARC and regional artists, is a different selection. Also, the Nandalal Bose Gallery hosts high-profile performances and boasts the largest exhibition space. This section is devoted to pieces by well-known contemporary artists. Among the paintings are "Saat Bhai Champa" by Gaganendranath Tagore, "Lady Ranu Mookerjee" by Atul Bose, "Musafir" by Abanindranath Tagore, and "Basanta" by Nandalal Bose. 

Original paintings and personal belongings of Rabindranath Tagore, such as letters, postcards, and even a strand of his beard that was given to Lady Ranu Mookerjee at her wedding and is securely stored in a silver box covered in German tissue, are on display at the exhibition. New mahogany frames gave 38 original Tagore paintings a new lease of life. Along with his old notebooks and Rabindrasangeet sketches, it also features photographs of him by legendary figures such as Gaganendranath and Satyajit Ray. The bronze figure of Ganesha by PV Jankiram and the sculpture "Head Study" by Ramkinkar Baij are not to be missed. The gallery's walls are also decked with paintings of "Scientist" by MF Husain, "Chandmari" by Nirode Mazumdar, "King" by Ganesh Haloi from his "Ajanta" series, and "Blue Herb" by Ganesh Pyne.
