Take Baba For Chaa

Not just any chaa er dokan (tea shop) —Tram Tea Shop! A tiny shop located directly at the entrance to Kumartuli. From the outside, everything appears simple, but as soon as you enter, you feel as though you have travelled back in time. A variety of teas, including the traditional dudh chaa (milk tea), are available at the tea shop. The Tram Tea Shop honours Kolkata's trams, which were formerly an essential component of the city's transit network. Madan Pal, the store's owner, has been selling tea in Kumartuli for more than 40 years. He decided to preserve the memories of trams by opening the Tram Tea Shop in 2020. Ginger chai, cardamom chai, and masala chai are just a few of the flavours available. Oh, and the bhar (clay pot) that you get the tea in? It is a miniature dhunuchi (a traditional Bengali incense burner)!

Go For A Second-Hand Book Buying Spree

My father was the one who taught me that reading is the key to everything when I was growing up in Kolkata. And what better way to express your love than to give him books? Commonly known as Boi Para, College Street is home to some of the most prominent publishing houses in West Bengal and India. Everything about Boi Para conjures nostalgia. You'll come across passionate shopkeepers who will show you what you need.

Another second-hand bookstore is the lane where old books find new homes, stretching from Golpark to Gariahat. A wealth of beloved classics, lost bestsellers, history, sports, and literature in Bengali and English can be found at these pavement stalls. This Boi Para also has antique Bengali magazines featuring stories by Sukumar Ray and Saradindu Bandopadhyay.

Pro Tip: Check out some of the most unique bookstores in the city here and make it a book-reading walk!

You, Dad And A Cold Beer

Having a lot to chat about with Dad? The best way to do that would be to find a spot where the beer is as good as your conversations with Dad. ØLTERRA at Park Street is one such place. ØLTERRA, or "The Land of Beer" in Greek, is an artistically designed cocktail bar and brewery. Hand-painted Greek mythical paintings representing the God of Thunder, Zeus, can be found on the walls inside, as well as the 100-foot-long island bar where all of the creative concoctions are made. And if you’re someone who loves The Godfather, The Peaky Blinders, and more, then you might just feel that way when you’re with your father at the speakeasy they have! The seasonal Alphonso mango beer and the chocolate mousse are to die for!

A Sunday Mass At St.Paul's Cathedral

Since Father's Day falls on a Sunday, this is perfect! Built by William Narin Forbes, it is regarded as the largest church in the City of Joy and the first Anglican cathedral in Asia, and it is dedicated to Paul the Apostle. Bishop Daniel Wilson, Sir John Paxton Norman, and Arthur William Garnett were among the notable individuals interred here. With its stunning stained-glass windows, lofty spires, and well-kept garden, this church is a favourite among religious travellers and photographers. It also boasts a sizeable library. Constructed between 1839 and 1847, it comprises a strikingly expansive nave and a west window with stained glass by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, a master of the Pre-Raphaelite style.

Take A Long Drive On The Howrah Bridge

Familiar with the scene in Piku where the camera simply moves up from the car throughout the montage to capture the Howrah Bridge? Yeah, that's exactly how you'll feel on the bridge. It has been 76 years since the Howrah Bridge was built. If long drives are something your father loves, then this bridge serves as the perfect getaway key. Approximately 97 metres wide and 705 metres long, it has eight lanes. It is the busiest cantilever bridge in the world, with about 1.5 lakh pedestrians and two lakh cars using it daily.
