Goa has an amazing dining scene that is only getting bigger and better every year. And a recent favourite from the lot is Tanjore Tiffin Room's entry in Goa in Anjuna. Folks in Mumbai are aware of the magic Tanjore Tiffin Room does on diners and we are more than thankful to them for bringing their modern Tamilian fare to Goa that serves the perfect escape from the avocado toasts and Goan thalis.
To set the scene, their space is set in a 150-year-old Portuguese-styled bungalow and has the typical Goan vibes everyone adores with an expansive rustic outdoor space that has greens all around. There are plants dangling off the ceiling that's done up with bamboo rafters to go with that easy-peasy laidback Goa theme. The indoors are a nod to French style of decor with hand painted walls and and brass detailing to tie in that home-y touch of houses down South. The al fresco area and private dining room with walls adorned with framed photographs are at your service too.
Coming to star of the show, the food, it's soul-satisfying to say the least. You start with the complimentary rassam and pappad and dive into ordering a round of cocktails inspired by Southern flavours (the Thailavah with tamarind, coconut and dark rum shouldn't be missed) with small plates. Now, when we say their small plates menu is huge, you better be clear on it cause it has like 30 offerings. We started with the Mini Gunpowder Idlis, Paruppu Vada and Baby Prawn Masala and my oh my, our tastebuds were doing a happy dance and calling for more. Then, their super warm staff comes in pulling our favourite trick and in comes the curry sampler with an assortment of different curries in the menu for you to taste and help decide what you are grabbing for the mains. We stuck to the much-loved Chettinad chicken, Pankajam's Lamb Chops and Pomfret Rawa Fry with flaky parottas (of course). Post finishing it all, we sat in silence for good five minutes or so, just in pure awe of the delicious food we had devoured. The flavours, a solid ten; the preparation, a 10/10 and that authentic taste just hits home.
Hand on heart, the chord Tanjore Tiffin Room Goa has struck with our heart (and stomach) can only be blamed for us violently recommending this restaurant to our friends. And we can't help but fantasise about another trip to Goa soon just to feast on that curry sampler.
