What Makes It Awesome

The smell of wood is thick in the air, a concoction of freshly cut wood and seasoned wood. Hammers loudly drop, and saws relatively whirr in the background. You'll hear people bargaining almost all the time, which is indeed considered an art here. Cash is very much king, and there is a feeling that those who negotiate well might just be able to walk away with some exceptionally good deals. Welcome to Sikanderpur furniture market!

On first impression, it looks like just a stretch of many shops lined up for a distance. It's not your kind of neat shopping mall; rather, it's one lengthy, prominent street market, but it is purely and completely the furniture that steals the show. You see anything and everything from the ornate, antique-style wooden pieces to the sleek and modern ones: beds, dining tables, shelves, almirahs, chairs, chests of drawers, mirrors, and wooden vases; you'll find it all.

Things To Know About Sikanderpur Market

The multiple shops of the market sell items mainly made of sheesham, teakwood, or ply. The prices depend on the type of wood. Since the shops don’t use too much reclaimed wood, you might feel the prices are a bit higher when compared to other affordable furniture markets in Delhi, but the finishing on everything is top-notch, and there's some wiggle room to bargain, of course.

Sheesham and teakwood come from various parts of the country, mainly Rajasthan. Some shops even have their manufacturing set there for bigger items, while the smaller items are made in the market itself. If you, too, like me, love seeing home inspo on Pinterest, you probably have an idea of what you want, and you can get it custom-made here.

Other than wood items, you'll also find a few shops selling outdoor wicker furniture—tables, stools, swings, chairs–the prices for these start at about INR 5,000 for a set of table and four chairs. They also replace weaving in case you have existing furniture that's in bad shape. From home furnishings to the things of life, there is a shop for almost anything, some offering home decor items with perhaps even a movie of frosted glass for interiors.

Food-wise, it's mostly about quick bites and local flavor. Street food stalls and small eateries are scattered all over, serving momo, chaat, rolls, and all sorts of North and South Indian snacks. It's somewhere you grab a bite on the go while shopping, rather than a place you would visit for a full meal.

The market is also relatively closer to the 32nd Avenue, where you can tuck into some fine dining places, bars, or even head for brunch and some more shopping.
