Lip balms are the hair ties of the skincare world. You either choose one and make it your partner all your life, or you lose them the minute you take them out for a spin. Most times though, you have one for every location—office bag, bathroom, car, kitchen.

There are a lot of things that make up a good lip balm, and SPF is one of them. For some folks who aren't sure what it is, SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and the number you find next to it indicates how well the product protects the skin against the sun, and all its nasties. As you know, lips being more delicate and less pigmented than other skin, are highly susceptible to sun damage so it is absolutely essential that you apply a lip balm with SPF during the day.

And with so many SPF lip balms flooding the market, we thought we'd try out a few and tell you all about it, so that you can skip the trial and error and choose one that speaks to you.

We have  been using The Body Shop Vitamin E lip balm for two months now, and while it settles in like any normal chapstick, that is not the end of how hydrating it is. Prior to this, we would have to occasionally use a lip mask to hydrate our chapped lips, but we have been able to eliminate that from my routine. As far as the lip pigmentation is concerned, we did not find the lip balm to correct our lip colour back to natural, but once we gave them a good scrub, removing dead skin cells, the lip balm did a great job of keeping them maintained.'

We are all aware of Neutrogena's spectacular formulas when it comes to skincare. They're known to be good quality, hydrating and super healing. This lip balm in particular has beeswax and carnauba wax and is fragrance free. We have extremely dry lips and can vouch for this one being not only super hydrating, but healing too, plus it lasts for a good four hours even if you drink water! (food, not so much). We also have pigmented lips, and safe to say, it hasn't gotten worse since we've been using this. It's affordable and one stick can easily last you a month.

The Sebamed lip balm claims to have triple protection by regenerating, nurturing and defending against UV rays. While all of those seem like a bunch of big words for marketing purposes we would say that they do mean what they claim! It does the job, plain and simple. It keeps your lips hydrated, you might not even feel the need to keep reapplying it. The product itself gets a huge thumbs up from us.

We've been using this Dot & Key lip balm for quite some time now, not only because we are a huge fan of tinted lip balms, but also because this is one of those lip balms with the highest SPF. It's easy to glide on, keeps lips moisturised for a good 3-4 hours, has Vitamin C and E, which helps with nourishment too. We particularly love it for how much shine and plumpness it provides! It comes in different fruity flavours, but Cherry Pop has got to be our favourite for daily wear.

This lip balm is our favourite on the list (god's honest truth) because it checks off all the boxes for us. It's formulated with ceramides and cocoa butter for keeping your lips moisturised but the best part about it is that it's more of a matte lip balm, doesn't have that crazy slip to it so you can expect it to stay put for long hours, especially when you are sweating. Kojic acid and niacinamide do a fantastic job at reducing pigmentation (yes, we have seen a difference) when used regularly. And with SPF 50 present for keeping your lips protected, you really can't go wrong with this one!

If you are looking for a tinted lip that's non-sticky and low on the gloss-y factor then consider getting your hands on the Nivea Caring Beauty Lip & Cheek stick. It has an SPF of 30 and does a fanstastic job at coating the lips for keeping them hydrated with organic almond oil and vitamin E. What we liked best about this one was that the pigmentation is insane and it doesn't budge much so you can easily apply a coat and get on with your day without serious reapplications required.

Our writer Niveditha has squeezed out every last bit of this magic brightening lip balm, because it helps with depigmentation like a charm! She's reapplying this as we write and says that she loves the lip balm for its hydrating features and the way it brightens your lips without you having to constantly worry about the results. Peptides and hyaluronic acid keep the lips moisturised while vitamin C helps with fighting off pigmentation coupled with SPF 30.

The Hyphen Mango Lipscreen is a recent addition to our heap of lip balms. It has a slightly runny balm texture so you can call it a cross between a lip serum, gloss and a balm. The mango flavour screams summer, like we are sipping on a mango daiquiri. It has SPF 50, great for wearing over lip liner or lipsticks during the day. It is infused with 2% kojic acid and claims to reduce pigmentation but we have hardly seen progress in this area. We would repurchase it only for the gloss effect it gives and high sun protection at a pocket-friendly price point.

Our dermatologist's recommendation for reducing pigmentation on lips, the NMF e Lip Care  is hands down the most high-performing SPF lip balm we have come across. It has SPF 40 but the reason we love it so much is because it's one of those lip balms that just don't simply sit on the surface but actually seeps in to heal chapped lips. Also, it's non-greasy and sensitive skin-friendly.
