We had the best sleep of 2025 so far. And that, too, in a treehouse. Having the best sleep on a weekend getaway is paramount for us, and maybe it's for you as well. That is why we are letting you know about Tranquil Resort, a place where you can have one of the best sleeps and then some. Just about a five-hour drive from Bangalore, in Wayanad is the 400-acre coffee plantation in which the century-old Tranquil Resort sits.
It's a slice of green haven that you wish you could retire to, but because you didn't inherit generational wealth (read this writer) and you have a 9-5 job that pays well, you do the next best thing — a weekend getaway to your dream retirement home. Because Tranquil Resort is everything that we dream about. There are endless greens of every hue. There are birds, bees, dogs, monkeys, and the occasional bison. Then there's the property itself. It is an old colonial-style building with a garden and a swimming pool, so you get the best of both worlds. The garden rooms are perfect for couples, but if you are coming with the kids, then the Chairman's Suite is highly recommended. Think rosewood flooring, poster beds, and the works.
And then there are the treehouses — two in number, one a tree villa, actually, and the other a treehouse. We ended up staying at the tree villa, a family-style tree house that's perched 35 feet above the ground and perfect for a family of four or couples who just love that extra space. We checked in one Friday afternoon when the plantation wildlife was busy. There's a balcony where you can sit and read a book or set up your outdoor workspace like we did. The villa is kitted out with everything you might need, including binoculars that you can use for birdwatching. There are over 100 species of birds that have been spotted by the property and the guests, so that's one activity you can do while you are here.
One very interesting feature of the villa is one of the ensuite washrooms that has a jackfruit tree growing through it. It's completely glass-walled, so you'll feel like you're taking a shower out in the jungle. Privacy is very much guaranteed because there are no humans or accommodations around. Just some pesky monkeys. It's at this villa that we had our best sleep, and just like one of those Disney movie scenes, you are woken up by birdsongs in the morning and the sunlight peering through windows. One morning, we even had a whole crew of monkeys putting on a show.
The other treehouse, which is built around a Gulmohar tree, is for those looking for a romantic getaway. The bed looks out to the coffee plantation, and it's simply stunning, and when we were shown around by the manager Swamy, we were just impressed at how beautifully it's made.
Time really slows down here, and that's why you'll feel like there's a lot you can do. In the mornings or late afternoon, you can take any one of the 10 nature trails that will have you trek through the various sides of the coffee plantation. We went through the long trail that led us deep into the plantation, and we came across two lakes that were other spots for birdwatching. There's an Indiana trail that Ajay Mathullla, who runs and manages the property along with his wife Nisha, told us we need to try if we are looking for a bit of adventure. Ajay is probably one of the jolliest folks we've met in a while and was always happy to hear that all we did most of the time was sleep when we met him for meals.
All meals happen at the community dining space, and it's a great way to meet the other guests. And the resident dogs — Sugarplum, Dynamite, and Duke. Sugarplum and Duke are the ones who inspired us to sleep all day long. We ended up meeting folks who have been coming here for decades one evening while we were at the Tree Lounge having coffee with Ajay. Homely food, buffet-style, is what's on the menu, and you'll be well-fed. If you end up going here for your weekend getaway, call ahead and ask if they can make Mani's Mutton Fry. It's one of the best mutton preparations we've had, and we have had dreams about it subsequently. Oh, and the Lemon Pie. Fabulous. Just like our weekend here at Tranquil Resorts.
