What Makes It Awesome

In the modern day of ordering ceramics online, a trip to the century-old settlement of Pottery Town comes highly recommended. Why? For starters, you'll get to see how the artisans go about making everything from diyas to tiny home decor pieces. And secondly, you also get a quick crash course on pottery.

Pottery Town was established during the rule of the Mysore Wodeyars. What was once a thriving community of artisans is now only a handful of artisans and shops that still ply the craft. With the metro construction (Pink Line of Namma Metro) happening nearby, the place has become chaotic. But once you cross all the civil work and enter the narrow lanes, you'll know you are here. These narrow lanes and streets are lined with small houses on both sides, and you’ll find entire porches and a good part of the busy street covered with every kind of earthenware.

What To Expect

Lines of fresh-off-the-wheel creations, still baking in the sun, sit next to ready-to-sell ware. If you are a gardener, you can take home pots and planters of various shapes and sizes. If you are into DIY, this is just the place for you. You can let your creativity run wild on the plain-looking vases, kullads, palm-sized diyas, and miniature pots and pans that you can find in almost every shop here. You can also poke your head around the doors of workshops and catch a glimpse of potters spinning their magic on the wheel.

Several shops let you get your hands dirty by teaching you how to make your diyas and vases. Most of them will have a signboard hanging out, and that's your marker to head to the spot. These quick courses start around INR 100.
