Best Places To Visit In Dehradun

Sahastradhara

Sahastradhara literally means ‘a thousand-fold spring,’ and it’s easily one of the most popular tourist spots around Dehradun. It’s the perfect place for anyone who loves a good scenic view. Here, you’ll find natural water dripping from limestone stalactites, and creating a sulphur spring that’s believed to have medicinal properties. For those who want to take in the panoramic, bird's-eye view of Sahastradhara, there’s also a ropeway ride that covers about 618 metres for around INR 250 per person, which we super-highly recommend.

Forest Research Institute

The Forest Research Institute is hands down one of the prettiest examples of heritage architecture in Dehradun. Standing tall since 1929, this grand structure jumbles between Greek and Roman styles, and is circled by lawns that make the whole place look straight out of a postcard. Honestly, it’s almost impossible to take a bad photo here. Beyond its beauty, it’s also one of the country’s oldest research institutes dedicated entirely to Indian forestry research.

Mindrolling Monastery

Home to a towering 130-foot statue of Lord Buddha and the 200-foot-tall Great Stupa (one of the largest in Asia), the monastery is an itinerary-must for those who love to know more about their culture. Its architecture is all about sacred symbolism that’s sure to intrigue anyone who is into art. After soaking it all in, you can explore the nearby Tibetan cafes and restaurants for a comforting post-tour bite.

Robber's Cave

Locally known as Guchhu Pani, Robber’s Cave is a hidden gem not too far from Sahastradhara. To get there, you’ll need to trek for about a kilometre — but the payoff is worth it. You’ll be greeted by a beautiful natural river flowing right through the middle of a cave. If you’re up for walking another half a kilometre, there’s even a waterfall waiting to be discovered. The cave does get narrower as you go deeper in, which can make the path a little tricky, so be sure to wear comfy clothes and slip-proof footwear. Also, try visiting during off-peak hours, because heavy tourist footfall can really take away the magic of the place.

Reaching Maldevta Waterfall might take a bit of time as it’s about an hour away from Dehradun and involves a 1–2 km trek, but trust us, it’s totally worth it. Even the drive to the parking area and the short trek are scenic enough to make the journey feel like part of the adventure. Once you’re there, you’ll be greeted by clean, gushing water and a cutesy Maggi point at the end that makes it all the more bookmark-worthy. There’s even a swimming pool and vintage huts where you can dine for full-on village-like feels. Dip your feet in the stream, sit on a rock and just watch the water flow.

Built atop a cave, the temple requires a short trek to reach and is home to two natural Shiva lingas. It also hosts the occasional Tapkeshwar Mela, drawing devotees and visitors alike.

It’s home to over 500 elephants, 12 tigers, 250 panthers, and around 400 species of birds, making it a must-visit for anyone who enjoys nature in all its raw glory. You can choose between jeep safaris or elephant rides to explore the biodiversity.
