Love Welcome? 10 Comedy Movies Like It With Insane Rewatch Value

There’s no denying that 2000s Bollywood—the Golden Age of Comedy—is truly unbeatable. The humour was off the charts, and legends like Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Rajpal Yadav, and of course, Akshay Kumar gave us performances we’ll keep cherishing forever. The comedy back then was raw and the comic timing unbelievably smooth that led to endless laugh-out-loud moments.

Sure, many of those jokes might now be considered borderline cancellable (you and I both know why). But what also deserves a shoutout is how pre-2010 comedy films, especially Priyadarshan’s, relied on good old situational, and comedy-of-errors plots. That style has mostly been abandoned today, which is probably why theatres are now re-releasing those hysterical classics and also because recreating that magic just feels downright impossible now anyway.

One such gem that truly sets the gold standard is Welcome. It is one of Akshay’s most hilarious films with a refreshing twist that saw him play the timid guy for a change, and he nailed it. The cast was stacked with brilliant performers, each bringing their A-game. And Nana Patekar’s iconic “Aloo le lo!” is forever etched into my mind.

If you're looking for more OG, timeless comedy films like Welcome, I’ve rounded up a bunch that are just as epic.

Hera Pheri

Hera Pheri

“The movie is hilarious” is honestly an understatement. The bomb trio of some of the best actors in Bollywood made this film about ten thousand times better. It revolves around Raju, Shyam, and Baburao Ganpatrao Apte, each dealing with financial troubles, who hatch a plan to claim a ransom. But, of course, the scheme goes sideways, leading to one comical twist after another.

Bhagam Bhag

Bhagam Bhag

Bhagam Bhag is undoubtedly one of Priyadarshan’s finest. A suspense-thriller-meets-comedy with an iconic climax, this movie is 100% unmissable. And let’s not forget Akshay’s improvised “Hi Rupa, naha liya?”—a meme, along with others from the movie, that still do the rounds on social media every single day. The plot follows a theatre group headed to London to find a new heroine, only to get entangled in a murder mystery they didn’t sign up for. What follows is pure ROFL energy.

Another gem by Priyadarshan, Malamaal Weekly revolves around Lilaram (Paresh Raval), a lottery vendor who finds out one of his buyers has won the jackpot…and died from the shock of winning it. Now Lilaram wants the prize money, but so do the rest of the village folks who get wind of the news. The chaos that ensues? You can already tell how funny it gets.

Garam Masala

Garam Masala

While yes, the movie did objectify women and would not work in today’s context, the jokes were still drop-dead hilarious. Garam Masala gave us Paresh Raval as Mambo and Rajpal Yadav as Babbar—two ultimate movie upgraders with punchlines that hit every single time. Even John Abraham, who usually sticks to action roles, was a delightful surprise. The story revolves around two flirtatious photographers, with Akshay’s character stumbling upon an empty flat occupied by three hostesses.

Of course, their shortcut leads them straight into the path of a dangerous criminal, and what unfurls is worth the watch!

De Dana Dan

De Dana Dan

De Dana Dan, what a BOMB playlist and an even bomb-er script! Another Katrina-Akshay starrer that audiences loved. Two broke friends, desperate to marry their girlfriends, come up with a bizarre plan to kidnap a rich woman’s pet dog and demand ransom. It’s wild, ridiculous, and somehow perfect. The IMDb rating doesn’t do it justice; just watch it, and you will say the same.

Golmaal

Golmaal Fun Unlimited

Golmaal is slapstick comedy at its peak. With its loud characters and fast-paced storyline, it follows a bunch of friends, Gopal, Lucky, Madhav, and Laxman (the only sane one), who get into trouble while trying to scam a middle-aged couple and flirt with their neighbour. The movie has 4 sequels and a 5th one is rumoured to be in the making, so you know they are doing something right.

Heyy Babyy

Heyy Babyy

I recently rewatched Heyy Babyy and laughed just as hard as I did last year, and last to last year. It’s non-stop entertainment from start to end. The plot circles around three womanisers living in Australia who suddenly find a baby at their doorstep. With no clue who the father is, they scramble to find the mother, all while slowly falling in love with the child.

Hungama

Hungama

Yes, another Priyadarshan movie, and this one is about a trio in a love triangle, along with many other eccentric characters, that make it deserving enough to have a spot in your watchlist. The storyline absolutely justifies the name, a storm of maelstroms that a bunch of misfits go through while having a misconception about each other's background.

Cast: Akshaye Khanna, Aftab Shivdasani, Paresh Rawal, Rimi Sen

Release Year: 2003

Duration: 2h 33m

Bhool Bhulaiyaa

Bhool Bhulaiyaa

And finally, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, the OG horror-comedy. No sequel has ever come close to matching the coolness of the original. It follows an NRI couple staying in their ancestral home, unaware of the paranormal presence lurking there. With a psychiatrist called in to solve the mystery, what unfolds is pure cinematic brilliance. It’s almost three hours long, and not for a second does it feel stretched.

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Rajpal Yadav, Vidya Balan, Paresh Rawal

IMDb Rating: 7.5
