Summers, where do I even begin? It’s a chaotic mix of the best and the worst things rolled into one season I’d honestly rather skip. Sure, I love the ice cream runs and breezy fits, but the merciless sun beating down like it has a personal vendetta? Umm, hard pass. A few days of relief from this weather feels less like a luxury and more like a necessity to recharge and survive the heatwave.

But what do you do when you're not exactly the "let’s go hike a mountain" type, yet you're still keen (read: desperate) to travel and unwind by the beach, sans the hot, sticky weather?

Now, I won't lie and say you’ll find a coastal paradise that’s actually cool during peak summer, because scientifically (I say this as a noob), the sea has a higher heat capacity, which means it ends up warming the surrounding areas too. So yeah, not exactly chill. However, there are a few coastal gems in India that are bearable, breezy, scenic, and blissfully quiet between April and June. If you’ve got that itch to “seas” a weekend away without the crowds or sky-high prices, check out this list for the perfect escape!

Gokarna, Karnataka

If you're looking for a vacation at a destination with pristine, secluded beaches and religious significance, you’ll love Gokarna. Known as the Varanasi of the South, it’s mainly famous for the Mahabaleshwar Temple. Since the beaches here are surrounded by forested hills and shaded by trees, the weather stays fairly breezy even during summer. That said, the afternoons can still get quite hot, so make sure to stay hydrated.

Average Summer Temperature: 26°C to 33°C

Must-Visit Places: Om Beach, Mahabaleshwar Temple, Kudle Beach

Diu, Daman & Diu

Much like Goa, Diu reflects on its past as a former Portuguese colony. It’s a small island with a mainland village that’s seriously underrated, so don’t expect the usual crowds you’d find in mainstream beach spots. The beaches here are a lot cleaner, too! Located near the Saurashtra region, Diu has a dry climate and a steady sea breeze, making it far more tolerable during summer than most other coastal destinations.

Average Summer Temperature: 26°C to 34°C

Must-Visit Places: Nagoa Beach, Diu Fort, Naida Caves

Alibaug, Maharashtra

A coastal town that's a go-to for Mumbaikars, Alibaug is one of the few beach destinations worth visiting in summer. Dotted with coconut groves and an open coastline, it allows for better airflow, especially around Kashid and Kihim beaches. You can also try water sports here, including banana boat rides, kayaking, and parasailing.

Average Summer Temperature: 27°C to 32°C

Must-Visit Places: Kolaba Fort, Varsoli Beach, Kashid Beach

Havelock, Andaman Islands

Havelock Island, or Swaraj Dweep, is one of the largest islands in the Ritchie's Archipelago. Located far from the mainland, it has an equatorial maritime climate, meaning stable, breezy temperatures year-round. The humidity is balanced by clean air and a lush, rainforested interior. It’s the perfect spot for divers and digital detoxers alike!

Average Summer Temperature: 25°C to 31°C

Must-Visit Places: Radhanagar Beach, Neil Island, Elephant Beach

Udupi, Karnataka

In Udupi, you get a mix of experiences, be it beach-based or cultural. It’s easy to avoid overpriced stays and overcrowded shores during this time. Thanks to the nearby Western Ghats, the weather stays fairly balanced, making beaches like Malpe and Kapu breezy enough to visit, even during peak summers.

Average Summer Temperature: 26°C to 34°C

Must-Visit Places: St. Mary’s Island, Udupi Krishna Temple, Kapu Beach

Agatti Island, Lakshadweep

A 7.6 km-long island in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, Agatti Island is known for its coral reefs, crystal-clear beaches, and vibrant marine life. It’s also a hotspot for water sports like snorkelling and kayaking. To be honest, the humidity is high, but it doesn’t feel too oppressive because of the constant ocean breeze. Even on hot days, you’ll feel more sun than heat, as the flat terrain allows better airflow. This is also a great spot for digital detoxers as it provides limited electricity and Wi-Fi.

Average Summer Temperature: 28°C to 35°C

Must-Visit Places: Agatti Lagoon, Agatti Island Lighthouse, Bangaram Island

Dhanushkodi, Tamil Nadu

Dhanushkodi has surprisingly low to moderate humidity due to its dry geography. Located at the southeastern tip of Rameswaram, it’s a narrow strip of land surrounded by the sea on both sides. It’s noticeably less heated than Kerala or Chennai. While the midday sun can be brutal, it doesn’t bring the usual sticky, sweaty discomfort.

Average Summer Temperature: 27°C to 35°C

Must-Visit Places: Dhanushkodi Ruins, Adam's Bridge (Ram Setu), Kothandaramaswamy Temple

LBB Tip: Varkala and Kovalam get mixed reviews. While they’re definitely less humid than many other coastal spots, it’s still best to check the exact temperatures before planning your trip—this goes for the other destinations mentioned too!
